The action takes place:<\/strong> in a particular public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the play:<\/strong> the main characters are the King and Queen\nof Latvia (Latvia has never had a royal family), the Princess and Princes.\nTariff is the somewhat exaggerated \u2018bad guy\u2019. The play consists of several\nscenes, from one stop to the next. Inspiration has been drawn from several of Moliere\u2019s\nplays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play “So Many Phones!” <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A laconic sit-com with black humour elements and tree couples who at the end\nof play are reconciled to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genre:<\/strong>  A comedy  of \u201cEuropean developing\ncountries\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cast size:<\/strong> 11: 8 male and 3 female characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the play:<\/strong> characters of the play include \u201csmall\npeople\u201d who have suffered all the changes of life, racketeers, Mafiosi, a\ncorrupt civil servant and his energetic mistress as well as the hostess of the\nhouse where the action is set and who has returned from across the ocean. The\nplay\u2019s laconic language and dynamic plot may help to make it into a musical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play “The faithfulness test or how faithful is your husband?” <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Genre:<\/strong> A character and situation comedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Length:<\/strong> 13 scenes with one interval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cast size:<\/strong> 13 female and 10 male roles many of which could\nbe played the same actors. The minimal number of actors required is 5 (3 female\nand 2 male).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Synopsis:<\/strong> The 30 year old Elke is the country\u2019s first lady\ndetective specialising in straying husbands. Working for middle aged female\nclients she visits caf\u00e9s, bars, restaurants etc to chat up their husbands and\nto see if they propose a more intimate relationship. It would not be a comedy\nwere it not for the various misunderstandings and confusion that arise in her\ndaily routine. A revolving stage is desirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the beginning of the play she feels beautiful, self-conscious and\nself-confident although\u2026 Then she begins to be visited by strange clients. To\npreserve their anonymity she gives them reference numbers of various\ncombinations of letters and numbers. There is Mrs XL who, imagining her husband\ntogether with Elke, becomes hysterical in the detective\u2019s office. Mrs X1, who\nhas already had her husband checked out and was found to be easily led astray,\nwants her husband tested again and this time, all the way. There is the well\noff lady (who\u2019s reference number is taken from the Jaguar she owns) and her\neven more influential husband who has no wish to seduce Elke, but to analyse\nher. When not circulating in high society he has pretensions of being a\nFreudian writer. The lady who has conditioned her husband not to stray by using\nmethods similar to Pavlov\u2019s experiments with dogs. Her husband, it turns out,\nhas not been conditioned and exposes Elke\u2019s provocation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The car fanatic husband who irritates Elke with his speeches and brings out\nan almost masochistic reaction in her. As a result of this painfully hilarious\nepisode, when Elke meets another easily, perhaps too easily, seduced husband,\nshe herself is reduced to hysteria. The wife of this over amorous husband does\nnot believe Elke\u2019s report and becomes aggressive towards Elke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elke meets other different characters. Lonely and confused, she converses\nwith the young feminist office cleaner. When relaxing or in times of confusion\nshe tapes the text of her forthcoming book. We learn of Elke\u2019s fragile and\nsomewhat mixed up inner world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there not an everyday, simple test during the play? Yes, one, but even\nthe outcome of this shakes Elke\u2019s confidence in her beliefs. The last test in\nthe play finds Elke having to put her fianc\u00e9 to the test. This has a happy\nending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play “In the Same Boat”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genre:<\/strong> drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cast size:<\/strong> two female and one male part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Scene take place:  <\/strong>1st \u2013 during late 1970\u2019s,\nScene 2nd and 3rd \u2013 during early 1990\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play was written in:<\/strong> 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Synopsis<\/strong>:Scene 1.<\/em> Husband and\nwife. A Latvian theatre star in her 50-ies welcomes her ten years younger\nhusband in his dressing room after his first true but belated success in\ntheatre. Seeing his wife in the dressing room is an unpleasant surprise for the\nhusband who despite his success has decided to leave the stage and become a\nfilm director. And he has decided to divorce his wife who until then had\nsupported him and advanced his career in the theatre. He is a strikingly\nhandsome man, famous all over theSoviet Unionfor his legendary part as a Soviet\nspy. However in the relationship game the wife turns out to be much stronger\nthan the on-screen spy. Using all the weaponry of psychological warfare, the\nwife finds out that the husband has met another woman with whom he could have a\nmeaningful relationship; the wife declares that she would not give him a\ndivorce. Still the husband insists. The wife goes on to threaten her husband\nand tells him how she organised refugee boats to cross the Baltic Sea from\nKurland over to Sweden in 1944 during WWII, while secretly being a KGB agent.\nThe boat trips ended up in the hands of the Red Army patrols close to the shore\nand for most of the refugees it meant a soon death. The legendary on-screen spy\ndoes not want to continue this conversation and leaves the dressing room.\nHowever his marriage lasts for many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scene 2.<\/em> Husband and lover. In the wake of the 1991, the husband\nhas come to see his long-time lover whom he had been meeting for ten years in\ngreat secrecy. It seems that this is a moment when their feelings and mutual\nunderstanding have reached the peak. He does not tell it to her in so many\nwords but he feels that he has finally regained his true independence only now\ntogether with the new Latvia state. However to have independence alone is not\nenough for him; and a creative personality who had been forced to live in lies\nor half-truths in his professional life for years needs spiritual cleansing or\nblessing. Like many others he has decided to receive it from a prophet who has\nfound his way toLatvia. Fearing for him, his lover resists this idea. They\nstart to argue and he leaves, offended that his lover does not regard him to be\ngreat enough to need this blessing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scene 3.<\/em> Wife and lover. Later also husband as a vision. Soon after\nreceiving the blessing of the false prophet the man the both women share is\ndead. The lover calla the wife in a fit of passion and arrives to her summer\ncottage. The older woman gets the psychological upper hand again and she finds\nout everything she has ever wanted to know, she even discovers that the lover\nhad been to the morgue and she had noticed strange spots where the false\nprophet could have touched the man\u2019s body. The younger woman is still in a fit\nof passion, she drinks whiskey the wife offers her, and after easing her heart\nthe lover accepts the wife\u2019s invitation to spend the night in the cottage where\nshe had met her lover secretly several times. As soon as her head hits the\npillow she falls asleep but the older woman cannot quench her anger and\napproaches her bed with an obvious intention to kill her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vision: a boat appears through fog. The man is sitting in the boat,\ndressed as a Red Army officer. He invites one of the women to join him in the\nboat. It turns out that he has chosen the older woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The morning starts with the younger woman\u2019s call to the police, telling that\nshe has found the older woman dead on the floor with a pillow in her hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play “The Last Romantics”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Length:<\/strong> A play in five stages in time with one interval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Synopsis:<\/strong> Three artistically inclined people (two men and\none woman) abandon the city (Riga) for life in the country as teachers. Both\nmen are friends and both are emotionally attracted to the woman. A unique love\ntriangle develops over the school year where friendship and idealism have\ngreater meaning than physical expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play “Latvian Party” <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cast size:<\/strong> There are six male and five female characters in that play. Music and movements would have been very important, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The play has no dialogue, it\u2019s action includes nine periods of time \u2013\nfrom the end of thirties up to now. The idea doubtless has come from famous E.\nScola\u2019s movie \u201cThe Ball\u201d. But in the case events take place not in dancing hall\nbut in a large flat and also the history of Latvia differs from the history of\nFrance in great deal.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play “Don’t Go There, Heaven knows where…”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Length:<\/strong> 2 parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audience:<\/strong> A play is for children and adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theme:<\/strong> A child\u2019s world and addiction. There are many ways\nof becoming dependent even before the use of drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cast size: <\/strong> the play is performed by children grownups and images. There are four children\u2019s roles (3 boys and one girl); the children, of course, may be played by suitable adults. There are six adult (the children\u2019s parents) roles and thirteen images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Synopsis:<\/strong> the main images are Dependence and Independant. Their struggle goes on throughout the play. Dependence is a wicked magician. She wants to subjugate both the children and the adults. But there are many forms of dependence! There is dependence on bourgeois standards, dependence on desires created by inner discomfort and finally, dependence on medicines, nicotine, alcohol, drugs, gambling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dependence has her assistants:- Barbie and Ken (superdolls), Slot Machine,\nTube of Glue, Spray \u2013 Flask, and other images that emerge from Dependence\u2019s box\nof wonders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Independant is not a magician, but an image and therefore his age cannot be\ndetermined. Like Dependence, he never sleeps. His dress is old fashioned, tails\nand top hat, but otherwise he is just like other people. He is alone in his\nfight against Dependence. He has no assistants, unless you discount the fact\nthat any child or adult can be his assistant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The play also has musical interludes \u2013 songs. The set is sparse and requires\nminimal resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play “To Smoke Grass”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genre: <\/strong>drama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cast size:<\/strong> 2: 1 male, 1 female.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Synopsis:  <\/strong>It is a story about love and\nmisunderstanding of two people coming from different generations, based on the\nbackground of post soviet socially historical circumstances. He <\/strong>(age\nof 39) \u2013 the representative of about hippie generation, She<\/strong> \u2013\nrepresentative of \u201cSnicker\u2019s\u201d generation, a student.  \u201cLet\u2019s smoke \ngrass\u201d \u2013 it is not appeal to try drugs, it is a generation of 20 years olds\ndesire for getting themselves into the other world full of spirituality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the original this play is meant for two actors He <\/strong>and She\n<\/strong>with some masses. The play in Latvia National Theatre is staged as\nonly a two actors play. Small budget performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

EXCLUSIVELY FOR GROTOWSKY\u2019S THEATRE CENTRE IN\nWROCLAW<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The play is not about drug addicts but about two people of different\ngenerations and their love.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is a teacher (39) and she (23) is a student. The phrases \u201clet\u2019s smoke\ngrass\u201d, \u201ccan you get me grass\u201d are uttered by her several times during the text\nof the play and it conveys a desire to enter a different spiritual world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He represents the generation of former hippies and to a large extent he\nhas retained the ideals of his young days, has \u201cpickled\u201d them (socialism with\nits stagnation to an extent has provided such a chance), and she wants to be\nthere with him, in his youth. She desperately implores him to give her a\nphotograph from his young days\u2026 Yet the picture cannot restore the times gone.\nIt is hard to live in two worlds at a time \u2013 in the spiritual world and the\nmaterial one. And today\u2019s world is much more material.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is easier for him. Having lived for many years in an inner opposition\nto the reality he has learned to live by the minimum. He Would almost be ready\nto live with only one thought that his lectures are wanted by somebody. Then\nunexpectedly comes love. It demands at least some comfort, protection,\nguarantees. He is unable to provide those in the given social reality\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has an ebullient temperament. She loves him, seeking understanding\nand protection, she loves him aggressively. On the walls of the shabby dump\nwhere they meet she writes lines from Tina Turner\u2019s song \u201cYou\u2019re the best\u201d. He\nsays that he\u2019s never know by heart such long poems with the exception of\nNekrasov\u2019s  \u201cThe Railway\u201d (The image of railway, the train crops up in the\nplay repeatedly). She asks him teasingly if she could call him \u201cdaddy\u201d. She\ntells him about her pals and lovers. About the princes of her dreams\u2026 She wants\nto get there \u2013 in the world of his youth and at the same time she wants him here\nwhere she\u2019d be happy to imagine herself in a TV commercial or as a model.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cO.K.\u201d she says after current row. Perhaps you are right. But you screen\noff my light with your truth. (Explodes.) It\u2019s hard for us! You don\u2019t even\nrealise how hard it is! We want to make our mark! We are young! But you\u2019re\nyoung too. Yet it\u2019s happened so that your generation has got stuck. And now we\nmust fight against each other.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cAre we fighting?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cYes, in reality we are.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They don\u2019t stay together. Yet they part with love. They part wishing to\nstart it all anew. They part wishing to enter another world and be with each\nother at the same time.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
